Daniel in the Lions' Den: Courage and Faith in Danger

A long time ago, a man named Daniel lived in the kingdom of Babylon. Even though he was far from his homeland, Daniel loved God and stayed faithful.

Daniel was very smart and hardworking. The king noticed his talent and made him one of the most important leaders in the kingdom. Daniel had power and respect.

Jealous Enemies

But other leaders in the kingdom were jealous. "How can we get rid of Daniel?" they wondered. "He's too successful and too well-liked."

They tried to find something wrong with the way Daniel did his job. But Daniel was honest and fair. He never cheated or treated people badly.

Finally, they came up with a plan. "The only way to get rid of Daniel is through his religion," they said.

An Evil Law

The jealous leaders went to the king. "Great King! We have an amazing idea. For thirty days, no one should pray to any god or person except you. Anyone who disobeys should be thrown into the lions' den!"

The king thought it sounded good. He made it a law.

But the leaders knew exactly what would happen. Daniel prayed to God every single day. He would never stop praying just because of a law.

Daniel's Choice

When Daniel heard about the new law, he knew what it meant. But he didn't panic. He didn't hide.

Instead, Daniel went to his room, opened the windows facing Jerusalem (his homeland), and got down on his knees to pray.

He prayed to God just like he did every day. He didn't do it secretly. He did it openly, for everyone to see.

Daniel's enemies were watching. They immediately reported him to the king: "Daniel has broken your law! He's praying!"

The Trap

The king was sad. He had grown to like and respect Daniel. "I don't want to punish you," the king said. "But the law is the law. I can't change it."

The guards grabbed Daniel and threw him into a den full of hungry lions. It was a deep pit with no way out. The king placed a stone over the opening.

The king was so upset that he couldn't eat or sleep. "I hope Daniel's God will save him," the king whispered that night.

A Peaceful Night

But Daniel wasn't afraid. Even surrounded by lions with sharp teeth and loud roars, Daniel trusted God.

God sent an angel to shut the lions' mouths. The lions couldn't bite or attack. They paced around Daniel but couldn't touch him. Daniel sat peacefully among them, and the lions didn't harm him at all.

A Miraculous Morning

The next morning, the king ran to the lions' den. "Daniel!" he called out. "Did your God save you?"

Daniel answered, "Yes, Your Majesty! God sent an angel and shut the lions' mouths. They haven't hurt me because God knows I'm innocent and faithful!"

The king ordered the guards to pull Daniel out. He came out of the den without a single scratch!

The king was amazed. "Daniel, your God is wonderful! He saved you!"

Then the king ordered that Daniel's enemies—the jealous leaders who made up the false law—be thrown into the lions' den instead. The lions attacked them immediately.

The King's New Law

The king made a new law: "Everyone in my kingdom must respect the God of Daniel. He is the true God who saves people!"

Daniel continued to be an important leader, and he continued to pray to God faithfully.

The Lesson

Daniel's story teaches us that doing the right thing sometimes comes with a cost. But when we stay faithful to God, He takes care of us. We might face danger or mean people, but our faith is stronger than our fear. God is always with us, even in the scariest situations. Being brave means doing what's right, even when it's hard.
