Jonah and the Whale: A Lesson About Obedience

God Calls Jonah

One day, God spoke to a man named Jonah. "I want you to go to the great city of Nineveh," God said. "Tell the people there that they are doing wrong things and need to change their ways."

But Jonah didn't want to go. The people of Nineveh were Israel's enemies! Why should he help them?

"I'm not going!" Jonah said. And instead of walking toward Nineveh, he ran toward the sea!

Running Away

Jonah bought a ticket for a ship sailing far, far away from where God wanted him to go. He climbed aboard, went down into the ship, and tried to hide and sleep.

But you can't hide from God.

Soon after the ship set sail, God sent a terrible storm. The waves grew huge and crashed over the deck. The wind howled like an angry animal. The sailors were terrified!

They threw boxes and cargo overboard to make the ship lighter. The captain woke Jonah up. "What's going on? Why aren't you helping? Pray to your God!"

The Truth Comes Out

The sailors decided that one person on the ship had caused this bad luck. They drew lots to find out who. The lot fell on Jonah!

"Tell us who you are!" they shouted. "What have you done?"

Jonah confessed, "I am a Hebrew. I worship the God of heaven, who made the sea and the land. I ran away from God's command. This storm is my fault!"

The sailors were frightened. "What should we do to make this storm stop?" they asked.

Jonah said, "Throw me into the sea. Then the storm will stop."

The Great Fish

The sailors didn't want to throw Jonah overboard, so they tried harder to row to shore. But the storm got worse and worse!

Finally, they prayed to God and said, "Forgive us, Lord," and they threw Jonah into the sea.

Immediately, the storm stopped. The sea became calm.

But Jonah didn't drown. God sent a great fish—maybe a whale—to swallow him! Jonah ended up inside the belly of this enormous creature.

Inside the Fish

For three days and three nights, Jonah sat in the darkness inside the fish's belly. It was scary, smelly, and uncomfortable. He had lots of time to think about his choices.

Finally, Jonah prayed. "God, I was wrong! I'm sorry I ran away from you. Please help me!"

God heard Jonah's prayer. He made the fish swim to the shore and spit Jonah out onto the beach.

Jonah Obeys

Jonah was soaking wet and covered with fish slime, but he was alive! And now he understood: God always knows what's best.

This time, Jonah obeyed. He walked to Nineveh and told the people, "Change your ways! God sees everything you do!"

And amazing thing happened—the people listened! They stopped doing wrong things and changed their behavior. God forgave them.

The Lesson

Sometimes we don't want to do what's right, but running away only makes things harder. When we listen to God and obey, good things happen. It's always better to obey the first time!
