The Good Samaritan: What It Means to Love Your Neighbor

A Man in Trouble

One super bright and sunny day, a man was taking a long walk from a city called Jerusalem all the way to Jericho. The road was bumpy, dusty, and full of twisty turns and big rocks. But oh no! While he was walking, a group of sneaky robbers jumped out from behind the boulders!

They were not nice at all. They took all his shiny coins, grabbed his clothes, and even snatched his shoes! Then, they left the poor man lying in the dirt, feeling very hurt and totally alone.

The First Helper Passes By

After a little while, footsteps! Crunch, crunch, crunch. A priest came walking down the exact same road. But when he saw the poor man on the ground... gulp! He looked away, crossed to the other side, and practically ran away! He didn't want to get his hands dirty.

Next came a temple helper called a Levite. Surely he would help, right? Nope! He peeked at the hurt man, tip-toed over to the other side of the road, and scurried off as fast as he could.

An Unexpected Hero

Then, along came someone very surprising — a Samaritan man! Now, back then, Samaritans and the hurt man's people did NOT get along. They were like rival sports teams that refused to even say "Hello!" to each other.

But this Samaritan had a big, superhero heart.

When he saw the hurt man, he didn't run away. He didn't look away. Instead, he felt so sad for him and zoomed right over to help!

Real Help

The kind Samaritan became a fantastic nurse! He carefully cleaned the man's owies, put soothing oil on them, and wrapped them up in cozy bandages. Then, he lifted the hurt man onto his very own trusty donkey! Hee-haw!

He didn't just drop him off and wave goodbye. He took him all the way to a safe and warm inn — like a hotel — where the man could rest in a comfy bed.

The amazing Samaritan even gave his own money to the innkeeper and said, "Please take super good care of my new friend! Buy him whatever food and medicine he needs, and if it costs more, I promise I'll pay you back when I return!"

The Lesson Jesus Taught

Jesus told this incredible story to teach us a super important lesson. He smiled and said, "Go and do the exact same thing!"

Sometimes, people get too busy or worried about themselves, just like the priest and the Levite. But the Samaritan stopped to help a total stranger — someone who wasn't even supposed to be his friend!

Being a good neighbor doesn't just mean helping your best buddies. It means being kind and helping ANYONE who needs it — no matter who they are or where they come from!

So, when you see someone at school or the playground who is sad, hurt, or feeling left out, be a superhero like the Good Samaritan! Stop. Care. And Help!

Because that is what true, amazing love looks like!
