The Widow's Mite: Sometimes Less is More

A Busy Day at the Temple

One day, Jesus was sitting quietly near the temple — the special place where people came to worship God and bring their gifts of money. It was a busy, buzzy day! People were streaming in from all directions, dressed in their finest clothes.

Jesus watched carefully as one by one, people walked up to drop their money into the big collection boxes. He noticed EVERYTHING.

The Rich People Show Off

First came the rich people. They walked up with their chests puffed out and dropped great big handfuls of coins into the boxes!

CLINK! CLANK! CLUNK! The coins made the loudest, most impressive sounds! Everyone around could hear exactly how much they were giving. The rich people looked very proud and very important.

More wealthy people came and did the same thing. They gave bags and bags of money. Some people watching even gasped and whispered, "Wooow, how generous!"

The Little Old Widow

Then... someone very different shuffled quietly up to the collection box.

It was a poor widow — a woman whose husband had died and who had nobody left to take care of her. She wore simple, worn-out clothes, and in her tiny hand, she held just two small copper coins. They were the smallest, least valuable coins in the whole land — worth almost nothing at all.

She didn't make a big scene. She didn't puff out her chest or wait for people to notice her. She simply walked up, dropped her two little coins in the box, clink... clink... and quietly walked away.

Hardly anyone even noticed. Two tiny coins? That was nothing compared to the bags of gold the rich people had given!

Jesus' Surprising Answer

But Jesus noticed! His eyes were sparkling. He called His disciples over and said something that absolutely blew their minds:

"I want to tell you the truth — that poor widow just gave MORE than all the rich people combined!"

The disciples looked at each other with big, confused eyes. "But... Master... the rich people gave SO much more money! How can two tiny coins be more?"

Jesus smiled and explained: "Those rich people gave money they didn't even miss. They have huge piles of money at home and they'll be just fine! But this widow? She gave everything she had. Those two coins were her very last ones. She had nothing else in the world, but she gave it all to God anyway."

"The rich people gave their leftovers. She gave her whole heart. That is the most generous gift of all!"

What Really Matters

Jesus was teaching His friends — and us — an incredible secret: It's not about HOW MUCH you give. It's about HOW MUCH it MEANS to you when you give it!

The widow didn't give to impress anyone. She gave because she loved God with everything she had. And God saw every single bit of it!

The Lesson

You don't have to be rich or important to give something wonderful! Maybe your gift is a big warm hug for someone who is sad. Maybe it's sharing your snack with a friend who forgot their lunch. Maybe it's giving up your favourite toy for someone who has nothing. Small gifts given with a BIG, loving heart? God sees them, smiles at them, and they matter more than you could ever imagine!
