The Widow's Mite: Sometimes Less is More

The Temple Collection

One day, Jesus was sitting near the temple treasury—the place where people brought their offerings of money to support God's house.

Jesus watched as people came forward to give their gifts.

The Rich People

First came rich people. They walked up proudly and dropped large amounts of money into the collection boxes. Clink! Clink! Clink! The coins made loud, impressive sounds.

Everyone could hear them. Everyone could see how generous these wealthy people were. They gave so much!

More rich people came and did the same thing. They gave large sums of money. They looked important and successful.

The Poor Widow

Then a poor widow came forward. She was all alone—her husband had died, and she had no children or family to take care of her.

She didn't have much. She was wearing simple, worn clothes. In her hand, she held two tiny coins—the smallest coins that existed. They were worth almost nothing.

Herself, she walked to the collection box and dropped her two small coins in.

Clink! Clink! Two tiny sounds. No one really noticed. It was nothing compared to the money the rich people had given.

She turned around quietly and left.

Jesus' Lesson

But Jesus noticed! He called his disciples over and said something that surprised them:

"I want to tell you the truth. This poor widow gave more than all the rich people!"

The disciples looked confused. "How can that be, Master? The rich people gave so much more money!"

Jesus explained: "The rich people gave money they didn't really need. They have plenty left. But this widow gave everything she had—her last two coins. She gave from her poverty, but she gave everything.

"The rich people gave their extra money. But the widow gave her whole living. That takes real faith and love for God."

What Really Matters

Jesus was teaching an important lesson: What matters isn't how much you give. What matters is how much your gift costs you.

When you give something you don't even miss, that's not a real sacrifice. But when you give something that matters to you—time, energy, kindness, or money you need—that shows real love.

The widow didn't give because she wanted to look important. She gave because she trusted God and loved Him with all her heart.

The Lesson

We all have something to give—even if it seems small. A kind word to someone lonely, helping your friend with homework, sharing your lunch with someone hungry, giving a hug when someone is sad. Sometimes the most valuable gifts are the ones that cost us something. When we give from our hearts—even if it's small—God sees it and values it deeply.
